Holistic Health and Wellness
Aromatherapy is an ancient holistic healing practice that has been used throughout history in many different cultures and societies around the world to treat the body, mind and spirit. Aromatherapy is both an art and a science. It is a natural, non-invasive treatment system designed to affect the whole person not just the symptom or disease. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to assists the body's natural ability to balance, regulate and heal.
Essential Oils are concentrated substances that have been extracted from plant material (leafs, flowers, resins, bark, grasses, roots, peels etc.) through distillation. Each essential oil has many different attributes (anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, sedative or stimulant, etc.) and is very powerful. When blended together their attributes combine and create a synergy which works on many different levels to help heal, relieve and support the body for the specific purpose they were blended for.
Aromatherapy can be traced back to before 3,500 B.C. The ancient Egyptians refined the use of aromatics in incense, medicine, cosmetics and perfumes as well as in their embalming and mummification processes. During the "Black Death" it was discovered that people who worked in perfumeries with aromatics seemed to be immune to the disease. In fact thieves would cover themselves in the fragrant oils to protect themselves against the plague. In 1928 René-Maurice Gathefossé, a French chemist coined the term "aromatherapy" while working in his families perfumery after severely burning his hand and plunging it into a vat of lavender oil. The pure oil reduced swelling, accelerated healing and left him with no scar. The WWII doctor Jean Valnet used essential oils to treat gangrene and battle wounds. In 1977 Robert Tisserand published the first English aromatherapy book which is a very influential reference to this day.
Aromatherapy can both prevent as well as treat active acute/chronic stages of illness or disease. Aromatherapy can be helpful for many ailments (the following is just a short list):
"For many common infectious diseases aromatherapy offers more effective and more wholesome solutions then conventional medicine" Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt
"Because the oils work in a different way from antibiotics, they do not have the usual side effects, and they tend to stimulate the immune system instead of depressing it." Robert Tisserand
Smell is the strongest link to the subconscious mind and we retain memories associated with smells for very long periods of time. It is said that our bodies can process between 10,000 to 100,000 different smells and remember them. It is very similar to a lock and key. When we first smell something it gets locked into our brain and then when we happen to smell that scent again it triggers the memory.
Our nasal cavities have thousands of olfactory nerve cells that carry scent directly to the Olfactory bulb which is located at the back of our nose. It has nerve endings that send messages directly to the brain. This is the only place where our central nervous system is directly exposed to the environment. That is why inhalation directly affects the central nervous system.
Our sense of smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than any other sense. Recognition of smell is immediate. Unlike our other senses such as touch and taste which must travel through the body via nerves and spinal cord before reaching the brain, the olfactory response to scent is immediate.
The Olfactory response bypasses the Neo-cortex (conscious brain) and goes directly to the limbic system of the brain. The limbic system affects the hypothalamus, endocrine gland, pituitary gland, autonomic nervous system and houses all our sensory experiences such as memory, emotions, sex drive, hunger, pleasure, instinct etc. It is the center of all of our emotions and there for affects our emotional behaviour.
The hypothalamus and endocrine systems play a critical role in the development of psychosomatic illness. Doctor’s are beginning to notice that the majority of their patients have disease of a psychosomatic nature. What this means is our minds have a large impact on our bodies. Our thoughts and emotions can eventually affect our physical bodies, we have known this for a long time but now it is becoming more and more evident. Aromatherapy helps to bring balance to mind, body and spirit and brings harmony to the whole person.
Recent studies show that those that suffer from Anosmia (loss of sense of smell) are still affected by Aromatherapy and they can still benefit from the aroma of essential oils on their mind and emotions.
